The Advanced Strategic Capabilities Accelerator (ASCA) launched the Undersea Navigation Challenge in September 2025.

The Challenge seeks to develop a prototype navigation system for undersea autonomous platforms that can operate without relying on Global Navigation Satellite Systems or acoustic transmissions.

Milestones

In May 2026, ASCA announced it had entered into contract with 3 Australian companies, Phasor Innovation Pty Ltd, Nomad Atomics Pty Ltd and Q‑CTRL Pty Ltd, providing a combined $7.2 million (excluding GST) to develop new undersea navigation technology.

Undersea navigation is a crucial capability for Defence to protect critical undersea infrastructure, enable operations and provide a strategic advantage for the effect of deterrence.

The Challenge is a joint effort across Defence, with support provided by Defence Science and Technology Group, Joint Capabilities Group and the Royal Australian Navy.

The Request for Proposal opened on 15 September 2025 through AusTender – Undersea Navigation Challenge and closed on 3 October 2025.
